The story
Nick Thompson is a 26-year-old professional triathlete from Perth, Western Australia. He races the full Ironman distance, 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and a marathon, and the Ironman 70.3 half distance.
He turned professional in 2023 and won an Ironman 70.3 in his first season, at Sunshine Coast. In 2024 he won Ironman 70.3 Tasmania and made his Ironman World Championship debut in Kona, Hawaii, finishing 21st.
2025 was the breakthrough: seventh at the Ironman World Championship in Nice, second at Ironman Cairns, and a 7:39:42 personal best at Ironman Texas. In June 2026 he came back to Cairns and won it, taking the lead inside the first 20 km of the bike and holding it through the marathon to finish more than seven minutes clear.
The bike is the weapon. He is ranked #18 in the world on the bike and his races follow a pattern: swim within reach of the front, ride away, then hold on.
"The win means everything, the first IRONMAN win being in Australia," he told Cairns Local News after the race.
